ARTIST STATEMENT//

My work is a process that examines my environment and shifts through the narratives that are woven in it. Working in video, I use these narratives, particularly studying the historical implications of these in how we understand stories, how we remember, and how we place ourselves within them. Using techniques and footage from diverse cultural spaces, from cinema to the music video to the home movie, I bring these together under narrative forms. The narrative sometimes punctuates, sometimes connects the image and sound. I use timing, pacing, and the quality of the image itself to play off of each other to expand the space and create a layering of histories and meanings.
Part of my process is collecting the remains of my environment. I am rearranging, dispersing material in a way where subjectivities can unfold. The work is opens an imaginary space where the notions of self and place can be re-written. Close-ups of personal objects and use of film footage and sound act as anchors for a personal and collective position, but are also transformative as they are repeated into a form themselves, which can be shaped, twisted, and turned.
