I was born in Springfield, Missouri. In Springfield proper. Lots of relatives lived outside the city limits. way outside. It's a whole other world in the ozarks. I read that Ozarks is from the french "aux arcs".
Springfield isn't that important though. I used to think the Springfield in The Simpson's was the same Springfield that I lived in. it's not. I can't write fondly of Springfield. To me it's nothing special. That was me there -- nothing special. I was the kid you always forgot. The one swallowed in the class photos. Not even the top of my head.
Springfield is just where the name lives. That's the center.
There are a few rogues. like me. I went so far I've never even been to Springfield.
I started off far. I started on the east coast. But I never became a part of it. I jumped around. People have complicated lives. I'm trying to tell it the best way I know how.
I've been distant lately. I've been wearing headphones. My concept of the livable world has shrunk. I've been in distress about distractions.
I don't read enough. or exercise.
The greater center is in Alsace, outside of Strasbourg. They live there, masters of french literature and french nationalists. Sometimes I say that is where I am from.
People like to hear that one. Mostly though I say I am from Kansas. This usually sstisfies people as well. It's harder to say that I'm from there.
Really I grew up waiting inside of a car in a little parking lot off the highway. and sleeping with my headphones on. or looking out the window. or trying to stretch my legs in short car.
I grew up in a car. but you can't answer, "Where are you from?" or "Where did you grow up?" with "a car".
It's better to say Kansas because it's not an interesting place and people don't have any questions to ask about it.
